Harvard adopted a policy in that says that students who join single-sex clubs will not receive endorsements or recommendations letters from deans on campus concerning post-graduate fellowships. Many news organizations tried to get a comment from the administration about the lawsuit, but they did not reply. Although single-gender clubs are not banned at Harvard overall, students who join them are prohibited from leading campus groups or becoming captains of sports teams. Harvard also does not endorse students who are members of single-gender clubs for prestigious fellowships such as the Rhodes Scholarship. The lawsuit against Harvard stated that the policy violates the law known as Title Back in June, Harvard went under scrutiny for its policies against Asain Americans applicants. However, average acceptance rate overall at Harvard during the time period covered by the dataset between was at 9. Asian-Americans were the only racial group whose acceptance rate dips below that average. Harvard denied the claim that they were limiting Asain-American applicants.

A study published Wednesday by Harvard Law School and the Natural Resources Defense Council found that dates printed on packaged foods, which help retailers cycle through stocked products and allow manufacturers to indicate when a product is at its peak freshness, are inconsistent. They confuse consumers, leading many to throw out food before it actually goes bad. Manufacturers often decide on their own how to calculate shelf life and what the dates mean.

The Justice Department this week signaled it would pursue Asian-American students’ complaints of bias in admissions at Harvard University, a move that could ultimately alter the future of affirmative action nationwide. Four decades after a landmark US Supreme Court ruling, affirmative action that brings diversity to college campuses has become entrenched.
Yet it has been continually challenged, upheld by one-vote margins at the US Supreme Court. For nearly three years, Harvard has been fighting a lawsuit targeting its admissions practices brought by a small advocacy group that enlisted Asian-American students. They claim the Ivy League campus caps the number of high-achieving Asian Americans as part of “racial balancing” that favors African Americans and Hispanics.
The advocates behind the case have a record of related litigation, and their long-held goal has been to end nationwide affirmative action programs designed to help blacks and other traditionally disadvantaged minorities. Now it appears the Trump administration could throw its weight into the case or, even more potently, launch its own lawsuit against university policies.
Either move could support a broader effort, seen in the Harvard lawsuit, to reverse a Supreme Court decision that allowed colleges to consider an applicant’s race as one of many factors in admissions, but forbade quotas. The action would play to a conservative base that has long abhorred practices that offer a boost to racial minorities, potentially at the expense of whites. In , the Supreme Court endorsed a University of Texas program that favored blacks and Hispanics by a vote of Two of the nine justices did not participate.
Abigail Fisher, a white student from suburban Houston, spurned by the state’s flagship Austin campus, had been recruited for the case by the same advocates behind the Harvard lawsuit. New DOJ involvement could ratchet up the pressure on universities like Harvard that place a premium on racial and ethnic diversity and ramp up the stakes for some Asian-American students.
In the Harvard lawsuit dating to November , the plaintiffs say Harvard holds Asian-American applicants to tougher academic criteria as a way to limit their admissions, which would violate federal civil rights law forbidding discrimination based on race.

A startup led by George Church, PhD, a pioneer in the field of genetics and genomic sequencing, is developing a dating app that would screen a user’s potential matches to prevent them from passing on inheritable diseases. Church, who helped launch the Human Genome Project in , discussed several ongoing projects at his lab at Boston-based Harvard Medical School.
The lab’s portfolio largely revolves around editing, combining and adding to human DNA to address challenges ranging from reversing aging to eliminating genetic disorders. The dating app is aiming for the latter: If two parents are both carriers of the gene for an inheritable disease such as cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia, their children have an even greater chance of contracting the disease. Church’s app would prevent carriers of these genes from dating by comparing users’ genomic sequencing data.
You’ll just find out who you are compatible with,” he said on 60 Minutes , explaining that the elimination of genetically incompatible couples would eventually result in the elimination of costly disease-carrying genes altogether. It’s about 5 percent of the population. It’s about a trillion dollars a year, worldwide. In these and other projects based on genetic modification, Dr. Church claimed that he and his team are not playing God, but “playing engineer,” while stressing the importance of caution.

This is the second of a three-part series on the ethics of academics. Today’s blog looks at Harvard University’s recently announced ban on sexual relationships between professors and undergraduates. On February 11, I will look at civility on campus. Today’s blog is done in a tongue-and-cheek way built on a cynical belief about Harvard’s new policy. The University announced last week that it will ban such sexual relationships but the ban does not seem to include graduate students in Master’s and Ph.
This makes no sense because professors are more likely to be sexually attracted to older, more mature students. Harvard released a statement saying a specially appointed committee “determined that the existing language on relationships of unequal status did not explicitly reflect the faculty’s expectations of what constituted an appropriate relationship between undergraduate students and faculty members The new rule reads, “No FAS [Faculty of Arts and Sciences] Faculty member shall request or accept sexual favors from, or initiate or engage in romantic or sexual relationship with, any undergraduate student at Harvard College.
Harvard said in a statement that the clarification of rules came as part of a review of its compliance with Title IX policies that prohibits sex discrimination in education. Why in the world would Harvard have allowed such relationships to go on for so long? The action comes nearly a year after the U. Department of Education announced it was investigating 55 colleges and universities, including Harvard, for violations pertaining to Title IX, the federal law prohibiting sex discrimination on college campuses.
In the past, many U. That has begun to change in recent years, with schools either barring professors from having sex with students they oversee or requiring them to recuse themselves from such situations.
