Lauren Gordon. Finding love has never been the simplest of tasks, but in the wake of the digital revolution, dating went from tough to a goddamn war zone. And while there are plenty of apps to choose from, OKCupid remains one of the largest free services for single people. But unfortunately, one plus-size single woman discovered that the service is deeply flawed in the way it searched for your perfect match. In an article for Plus Model Magazine , Sapora eloquently broke down why this question and several others pertaining to body-type preference is deeply flawed:. In , OkCupid allowed users to weed out dates by body type, allowing candidates to self-identify and deselect options from “skinny” to “curvy” to “used up. One of the co-founders of OkCupid, Sam Yagan, defended this feature, saying it serves as a realistic dating option. Note how the left question is worded neutrally, while the right question implies a bias by using “still sexy” versus simply saying “sexy. She provided over 20 examples of biased wording, but admitted there were still hundreds of questions she could have referenced, before making this incredible point:.

Sexual attraction is important, and we all have a type. I used to be a My body was in constant pain and my confidence was nowhere. So instead of bringing me low by pointing out how big I am, these men are just making themselves small. Dates often ask coquettishly how I got this way, and are astonished when the answer is about losing, not gaining, weight.
Every woman — whatever weight they are — knows that this fluctuates weekly, if not hourly, as does how we feel about our bodies. When it comes to the actual dates, dating while plus-size is yet another minefield. There are the obvious no-nos. Rock climbing is out. Wind surfing, too. I took myself off to cry in the loo. And chips. Trying to negotiate the politics of eating on dates makes me long for something simpler to solve — like Brexit.
Another ordered a salad for me without asking what I actually wanted.

For many active users, the expectation that someone will share not just a headshot, but a full body pic, has become commonplace. But is that expectation fair? The full body picture debate has been a hum of a conversation since online dating rose in popularity.

By Andy Soltis. OkCupid said singles are going to size up their date prospects according to what they consider physically attractive anyway, so the site is doing nothing different from what goes on in bars and clubs. But outraged critics said the body-type filter is a form of online discrimination. However, site co-founder Sam Yagan said the filter option is, well, just an option. OkCupid, originally launched under a different name by a group of Harvard students, has claimed more than 3 million users.

Are You Really “Slender”?
This study compares differences in body type preferences for dates between African Americans, Asians, Latinos and whites in the United States. With an intersectionality perspective, we address gender and race—ethnicity simultaneously.
The expectation for full body pics in online dating has become “You might think you’re not attracted to someone with a certain body type, you.
Online dating as a bigger woman can be brutal. I’ve been called a “fatty” or “fat bitch” by men on Tinder, or told that men would only have sex with me as a favor, because men could never be attracted to someone my size. I’m not insecure about my appearance, but when I first got into online dating, I found myself obsessing over my weight in an entirely different way.
I worried my pictures made me look thinner than I actually am, and men would call me out for “lying” about my size. On sites like OkCupid, where you have to fill out a series of questions relating to sex, dating, and personality, I’d preemptively check how a guy answered questions like “would you date someone who is overweight? I eventually got over this, and I realized I’d created problems for myself that didn’t need to exist.
But I was intrigued when I heard about WooPlus , a new dating app for plus-sized men and women to date freely, without the fear of being fat-shamed. According to Michelle Li, one of the co-founders of WooPlus, the idea for the app came after viewing a viral “social experiment” video, where men reacted viciously to being set up on a Tinder date with a woman who ended up being fatter than she appeared in her photos. This same video cites a study that says women’s greatest fear in heterosexual dating is that they’ll be matched with a serial killer, and men’s greatest fear is that they’ll be matched with a woman who is fat.
If that’s actually true I couldn’t find the study , I can see how an app like WooPlus is meant to be a safe space of sorts. Of course, the idea also has its flaws: Does an app like WooPlus put too much emphasis on weight, rather than looking past someone’s size to get to know him or her as a person? Does it fetishize big women, or attract people who are simply looking to fulfill a fantasy with someone BBW?
When I later asked Li about this, she said: “We can’t stop it all, but we have a lot of features already in place where we’re detecting certain words [like fetish] and removing those users right away.
OkCupid founder defends filter that screens dates by body type
Last week we brought you the story of Max , a man who stood up his date when he discovered she lied about her body type. Hard to say. Anyone who has been to a Scottsdale club on a Saturday night, or a Monday for that matter, will know what I mean. With the exception of their enormous, fake double-D implants, the women that frequent these clubs are waif-like.
So, if I mark slender, I have a feeling my dates may be a little disappointed.
The emerald green lake is the perfect backdrop for my photo. I hand my phone to my friend and she proceeds to snap some pics of me by the water. I swipe through the results, instantly disappointed. Most are unusable: My hair is blowing over my face. Mainly, she has caught my full figure inside the lens, and that is nothing I want to share.
I take matters into my own hands. I grab my phone, angle it just right, and press. Tugboat, trapezoid, pear. I wished for the power to crop my thighs right out of his periphery. I take a few more shots in hopes of getting the perfect profile image to use for online dating sites. While it is, in fact, me in the image, foolish grin and all, I realize that I feel deceitful.
Perhaps not as false as bald men only posting photos of themselves with full heads of hair, but it feels false just the same. These pictures get a lot of responses.

This Is Why Full Body Pics Are So Controversial In Online Dating
Finding an ideal love match is always tough, but dating site OkCupid is trying to make that task easier for some users by allowing them to screen their potential dates by body type. The body-type filter is an extension of what happens in the real world when people narrow down potential dates based on what they see, said Yagan, who is also the CEO of Match.
Some men say they prefer brunettes to blondes, while many women insist they will never date someone shorter than they are, he said. Screening out potential mates by physical features is nothing new, even online. Our strict rules and natural selection process ensures all our members have winning looks. Those rules ban, among other things, “saggy boobs,” sweat patches, nerdy glasses and cackly laughs.
